Mussolini waited a while until it was "obvious" that the Germans were going to win WW2 and by 1940 he had committed his forces, such as they were, to Hitler. Apparently, when told that Hitler had the Italians on his side, Churchill said "that's only fair. We had to have them last time." Before the war was over, Mussolini had switched sides to fight with the soon-to-be-victorious Allies, but it did him little personal good. He and his wife were hanged from lampposts by Italians.
