After Ross was widowed by her first husband John in 1776,during an explosion while on militia duty. Betsy Ross married her second husband, a sailor by the name of Joseph Ashburn the following year in 1777. Sadly, after his ship was captured by the British in 1781, Ross was widowed again when he passed away in prison in 1782. Her longest lasting husband was her third marriage of 34 years to Ashburn's former prisonmate, whom she met when he delivered the news of her second husband death. They were married in 1783 until his death in 1817.

Betsy Ross's family was caring and loving the only time they weren't supportive was when she married John Ross. It was because Betsy was a Quaker which was her culture but John wasn't so her parents wanted her to marry someone who was a Quaker. But Betsy didn't like that idea because she was in love with John. Betsy sister was supportive though because she was already married she had married a sailor and he sailed Betsy and John to the other side of the river to get married so that's just what they did.
