Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) was a British explorer who commanded three expeditions to the Antarctic (1907-09, 1914-17, 1921-22), during which the South Magnetic Pole was located in 1909.
His first expedition to Antarctica was with Ernest Shackletons Nimrod Expedition of 1907.
On his first expedition, his ship was named the Nimrod. On his second expedition, his ship was named the Endurance, and on his final expedition his ship was named the Quest.
As a geologist, Sir Douglas Mawson contributed greatly to our scientific knowledge. However, as an explorer he made two major discoveries. He was part of the first ascent of Mount Erebus on Ross Island and discovered the Magnetic South Pole, both as a member of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. He also led his own expedition to Antarctica, the Australasian Antarctica Expedition, and he mapped a great deal of the coastline of George V Land on this expedition.
he dicovered that he was not first to reach the south pole.
British explorers include Henry Hudson (he tried to find the Northwest Passage); Ernest Shackleton (he explored Antarctica); Sir Francis Drake (first Englishman to sail around the world); and Sir Walter Raleigh (he explored the New World and established a colony in what became Virginia).
Mawson's first trip to Antarctica was in 1908 - 1909, as part of Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition.
Ernest Shackleton went to Antarctica to lead the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-1917. His goal was to be the first to cross the continent from one side to the other via the South Pole.
His first expedition to Antarctica was with Ernest Shackletons Nimrod Expedition of 1907.
Ernest Shackleton made three major journeys to Antarctica. His first was as second-in-command on the Discovery Expedition from 1901 to 1904. He later led the Nimrod Expedition in 1907-1909 and the famous Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-1917, during which his ship, the Endurance, became trapped in ice.
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, CVO, OBE, FRGS led three expeditions to Antarctica. His first journey was as the third officer with Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition in 1901. Discovery set sail from the Isle of Wight on 6 August 1901.His second expedition attempted to 'conquer' the South Pole, and his team achieved 88 degrees S, only 97 miles from the South Pole. The Nimrod sailed on 11 August 1907, but Shackleton sailed at a later date.Shackleton led the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, planned for 1914-1917. This was to be the first land crossing of the continent. Endurance left Plymouth on 8 August 1914, but Shackleton, remaining in England to finish expedition business, sailed on a faster ship on a later date and joined the expedition in Buenos Aires. These details all from multiple entries in Wikipedia covering Shackleton and his three expeditions.
Ernest Shackleton's exploration was driven by a desire to be the first to reach the South Pole, to further scientific knowledge of Antarctica, and to enhance his reputation and secure his place in history as an explorer.
Ernest Shackleton left from London to go to the South Pole for his antarctic expedition on the first of august in 1914. He and his crue members were stuck in the bitterly coldness for almost 2 years.
The members of the first expedition of Captain Scott to Antarctica, known as the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904), included Ernest Shackleton, Edward Wilson, and T.W. Edwardes, among others. The expedition aimed to explore and conduct scientific research in the Antarctic region.
Shackleton was the first to reach the closest point to the South Pole; Shackleton reached 88 degrees 23 minutes on the South Polar Plateau on January 9, 1909.
Sir Ernest Shackleton first sailed to Antarctica aboard the Discovery. The Discovery left London on 31 July 1901, and by way of Cape Town and New Zealand, arrived on the Antarctic Coast on 8 January 1902.
On his first expedition, his ship was named the Nimrod. On his second expedition, his ship was named the Endurance, and on his final expedition his ship was named the Quest.
Sir Ernest Shackleton dreamed of being the first person to reach the South Pole but his dream never came true, as Roald Amundsen beat him to it. However, Shackleton went on to lead an ambitious Antarctic expedition in 1914, aiming to be the first to cross the continent via the South Pole.
