How did basquiat kill himself?

Jean-MIchel Basquiat did not kill himself. He died in bed of accidental overdose on extremely hot August New York City temperatures early on Friday, August 12th, 1987, after a night out in which he was using drugs. The Chief Medical Examiner's eventual autopsy report gave the cause of death as "acute mixed drug intoxication (opiates-cocaine)."Basquiat had been depressed in his final years, and a user of different drugs, and apparently addicted to heroin. However, he had a positively received comeback show in New York in April, 1987. In June 1987 he flew to Hawaii where he stopped using heroin, in an attempt to quit the drug for good ( "There's no heroin there," he said, "and it's so beautiful you don't even think about it.") He had plans to travel to Africa with a friend later in the year. However, when he returned to the U.S. he still seemed physically and emotionally unwell, and started using the drugs again.According to one biography: " Basquiat was ironically in a vulnerable state because of his attempt to kick off the habit." He had built up a tolerance to heroin and had been increasing the doses he used. After going without, that tolerance was lessened. "It is a common mistake for drug users who have relapsed after a period of abstinence to go back to the level they had been using at their peak, only to find out that the dose is now too much-often enough to cause an overdose."He was out clubbing in New York late on Thursday night (August 11th), and looked "remote," according to a friend. It had been exceptionally hot and humid for weeks, and that night was 95 degrees. He made it home to his un-air-conditioned loft early Friday morning, and in the late afternoon was found by his girlfriend unconscious by the floor next to his bed, by his girlfriend in the late afternoon. An ambulance was called, but Jean-Michel was pronounced dead on arrival at the Cabrini Medical Center that day.Fretz, Eric. Jean-Michel Basquiat: A Biography. Greenwood Press, 2010.

How is Banksy art different from Pablo Picasso's?

This site can explain some: Thanks to Banksy, there's money - lots of it - in illegal wall painting. But can artists who made their names on the streets keep their credibility when the galleries flash their cash? Move over, Banksy: Meet the next generation of artists comin…Thanks to Banksy, there's money - lots of it - in illegal wall painting. .... The difference between the graffiti Lewinsohn sees on East End walls and work ...http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/features/move-over…About Basquiat art critic Robert Farris Thompson writes, " What identifies Jean-Michel Basquiat as a major artist is courage and full powers of self-transformation. That courage, meaning not being afraid to fail, transforms paralyzingly self-conscious 'predicaments of culture' into confident 'ecstasies of cultures recombined.' He had the guts, what is more, to confront New York art challenge number one: can you transform self and heritage into something new and named? (36)" Very little criticism has been done examining the work produced by Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his place in the history of American art is still under dispute, it cannot be denied that during the eight years that he painted, his much of his work examines the legacy of the colonial enterprise and his relationship to that legacy. Whether recasting the work of European masters like Leonardo Davinci in his own terms or recounting events from Haitian, Puerto Rican, African and African American history, Basquiat presented a vision of a fragmented self in search of an organizing principle. Now, ten years after his death, critics can revisit his work apart from the taint of the market-driven art boom of the 1980s. Perhaps some of the tools developed in the field of postcolonial studies will help to unlock some of the mysteries contained in the work of this fascinating and complex artist. Three of his works that rather overtly examine isssues of colonialism and the position of the post-colonial subject are reproduced below. * http://www.english.emory.edu/Bahri/Basquiat.html
