On the expedition's return trip in 1806, Lewis travelled separately from Clark. Along with just six men, Lewis met a party of Blackfoot and camped with them.
An alarm was raised in the night and the Blackfoot were discovered attempting to steal the party's rifles - one native was stabbed to death and another wounded by a shot fired by Lewis himself (it is not recorded if this second Blackfoot died). For decades after this incident the Blackfoot tribes made war upon all the pioneers who came westwards through their territory.

Generally speaking Courts and Society said that you can kill Indians, charge to kill Indians (for fun) and Indians cannot kill you (it is unlawful for an Indian to kill a white man). These same institutions also said: You can move onto the land owned by Indians, and as long a you make claim to it, you become the owners of the land and Indian law no longer applies to that parcel of land (IE: Native law that you can kill a thief cannot be implemented). The end result of this is: American's could move onto Native American lands, kill Indians, claim the Indian is the aggressor and call for the government to wipe out the tribe - and that is resolution.
Lewis and Clark's expedition resulted in the deaths of one member of their group, Sergeant Charles Floyd, who passed away from what is believed to be appendicitis. They did not directly kill anyone during their journey.
