The "entente" was actually a prewar COMMERCIAL, NOT MILITARY treaty between Britain and France. The French and the Russians had a Treaty of Military Alliance from 1892. This was in response to the Triple Alliance, of Germany, Austro-Hungaria, and Italy, created in 1882. Because Russia was an ally of France, and Britain was also in the war on the side of France (having entered the war over German violation of Belgian neutrality though, and not because of any alliance with France), the whole coalition was sometimes called "the Entente Powers".
At the beginning of World War I, the following three countries were members of the Triple Entente (or, Triple Alliance): Great Britain, France, Imperial Russia. Many other countries would join this alliance by the war's end.

Russia
Britain joined the Triple Entente in 1907, solidifying its alliances with France and Russia. This agreement was partly a response to the growing threat posed by the Central Powers, particularly Germany. The Triple Entente aimed to counterbalance the military strength of the Triple Alliance, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Those fighting for the Triple Entente were called allies. The Triple Entente consisted of the countries of France, England, and Russia.
