Stonewall Jackson's infantry occupied Frederick, Maryland on September 6, 1862. Soon after he was joined by General James Longstreet. This town played a big role in Lee's raid into Maryland.
He lived in a house upon the home plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. It is described as about twelve miles north of Easton, in Talbot county, and is situatted on the border of Miles River. He says he spent two years as a child, working as a slave, then moved to other locations and was sold numerous times before his freedom was purchased by two women.
Lee had split his forces, and Pope hoped to get between Lee and Jackson and destroy them piecemeal. But Jackson was too quick for him. He chased Jackson all over northern Virginia, with Jackson always "retreating" and being gone when Pope got there. But then Jackson was ready to occupy Pope while Lee closed in, and so he advanced. Pope had no clue that anything had changed until he found himself engaged. Overconfidence and wishful thinking may have played a part, too, as it did with General Hooker at Chancellorsville. Jackson made his stand behind an old railroad cut, where he held Pope off until Longstreet's corps stole up on his flank, who hit Pope like a thunderbolt, rolling his forces up.
'Confederacy union' is a contradiction. The Confederacy was the South. The Union was the North. Chancellorsville was a serious defeat for the Union, because it destroyed public faith in General Joe Hooker, who had looked as though he would soon occupy Richmond. But was also a bad day for the victorious Confederates, as Lee's right-hand man Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded there. That army would never be quite the same again.

On September 8, 1862, General Lee learns that Union troops occupy Harper's Ferry and therefore block the northern section of the Shenandoah Valley. Lee expected to draw supplies from the Valley, however, with enemy troops controlling Harper's Ferry, this would be impossible. Generals Jackson and McLaws must wrest control of Harper's Ferry as soon as possible. This requires both generals to march south from Maryland. The immediate problem then was that precious time is lost in the Maryland raid campaign.
