President Wilson asked Congress to Declare War against the Central Powers on April 2, 1917, and Congress did so on April 6. By November of 1917 the first US units were in France and undergoing their initial tours of familiarization in quiet sectors of the trenches. The main strength of the US was not fully felt on the battlefields until June 1918, and most US casualties in the war came in these last six months of it, as the US became fully involved in the fight.
