Well they were around when Richard I Lionheart was killed by one in 1199, but I don't think they were at Hastings in 1066, so that narrows it down to 130 years or so..... & then I look it up to find that the Chinese had them... wait for it, in the 5th century BC !!!

What is the history of the crossbow?

It was invented between 600 and 500 BC in or in the neighborhood of China. Its use quickly spread as it turned out to be a powerful and very easy to use weapon. Around 450 BC it was already in use in ancient Greece, who over time developed larger varieties for use as siege weapons. In medieval Europe armies usually had whole army groups of mounted and unmounted crossbow men. The arrival and development of firearms finally meant the end of the crossbow and in the course of the 16th century it vanised from the armies. As a hunting weapon it long remained popular, and today the crossbow has returned to army use; sometimes as a silent killer by special forces and during the Yugoslav civil war also by regular forces.
