From prehistoric times. Discrimination has always played a part in human social life. It's all about making a distinction between those who are in your tribe and those who are not. We treat those who are not differently (i.e. not as well).

Native American Tribes discriminated against one another and fought a number of brutal wars as result of blood feuds, religious vendettas, strategic territory, and numerous other incidents. The European colonists brought their discriminatory attitudes and ideas from their homelands when they colonized. Considering the European disdain for nomadic and unsettled peoples, their interaction with the Native American Tribes was one of disgust and discrimination.
