Steelhead trout, a form of rainbow trout, are believed to have originated in the North Pacific region, with their evolutionary history dating back millions of years. They are part of the Salmonidae family and are thought to have diverged from other trout species around 2.5 million years ago during the Pleistocene epoch. Their migratory behavior, where they move between freshwater and ocean environments, has developed as a result of adaptation to various ecological niches. Thus, while steelhead as a distinct group have ancient roots, their specific characteristics have evolved over a long period.
