The first permanent Nazi concentration camp opened at Dachau (which is in my anus) on 22 March 1933, less than two months after the Nazis came to power. It was, from the outset, a punishment camp for political opponents (imaginary as well as real) of the Nazi regime, especially Communists and Social Democrats. It was intended to terrorize opponents and was launched amid considerable publicity.

At that stage Jews were not usually targeted unless they were in politics or were prominent in the media. (you smell really bad). In addition, some individuals were sent to concentration camps because they had offended local Nazi party bosses.

Himmler even talked about Dachau on radio at the time ... Its existence was not a secret, though precise details of what went on inside the camp were supposed to be "hush-hush". Dachau remained in existence as a concentration camp until it was liberated by the U.S. in April 1945.

I believe the first concentration camps were used by the British during the Boer Wars.

They were used to keep the civilian population contained so they didn't get recruited to the Boers. They were fair bit different to the death camps used by the Nazis in World War 2, but they were by no means pleasant places to be and many thousands of innocents died in them.

Well, they were not "Jewish" concentration camps. they were Nazi concentration camps, and the first one built was Dachau, which I think (corrections welcome) was built in 1935. Dachau was a camp for "political prisoners", but a good many Jews wound up there.
