Hi
The Viet Nam war was actually started by the French in the early 1950s, but they pretty soon realized that it was an unwinnable war and were happy enough to turn it over to the Americans, with their insane fear (real or convenient to get money from congress for new super-weapons) of COmmunism in the mid 50s.

At first, the South Viet Namese soldiers were merely "advised" by a few thousand American troops, but it wasn't long before combat troops were being sent; first a trickle of regular army then, as the conflict escalated, to thousands, then hundreds of thousands of both regular and drafted combat troops.
