The first parliamentary candidate representing the workers was Keir Hardie with the Independent Labour Party (a breakaway from the Liberals) in 1893.

A rival party called the Labour Representation Committee was set up in 1900 under Ramsay MacDonald. This was soon re-named the Labour Party, and supplanted the ILP.
