America did not want to be involved in distant conflicts. But when Germany sunk the Lucitania, America had no choice they had to enter.
The Lucitania was a civilian ship torpedoed by a German U-Boat (submarine) during World War II. The official story from the Allies was that it was an unprovoked attack on a civilian ship. The official story from the Axis side is that the Lucitania was secretly smuggling weapons for the war effort and was therefore a legitimate target. Either way, this incident helped fuel the outrage in the United States against Germany and Italy, and brought the USA closer to participating in the war.
