The first probe was launched on the 20th of August 1975
They were rover missions to Mars.
Photography did not exist for another 800 or so years after the Viking Age. Unless of course you are refering to the Viking Exploration Program from recent years, at which point it photographed the landscape of Mars.
The Viking program was a pair of probes launched in 1975, Viking I and Viking II, which were both sent to land on Mars. They ran a series of experiments while on the planet, Viking I operated for just over 3 and a half years until it suffered battery failure. Viking II operated for just over six years, unfortunately human error caused its antenna to stop working, and it could no longer communicate.

The first United States spacecraft to land on Mars was Viking 1 on June 19, 1976. It was followed by Viking 2 on September 3, 1976.
It was Mars 2, from the Soviet Mars Lander Program.
The Viking 1 and Viking 2 spacecraft took pictures of Mars in 1976 as part of NASA's Viking program. These missions were the first to successfully land and operate on the surface of Mars, providing valuable data and images of the planet.
No Viking landed on the Moon. They landed on Mars. Look the program up on Wikipedia, it's pretty interesting.
The 1976 unmanned spacecraft that took pictures of Mars was called Viking 1. The Viking program consisted of two spacecraft, Viking 1 and Viking 2, which both successfully landed on Mars and sent back a wealth of images and data about the planet's surface. These missions provided important insights into Mars' geology, weather, and potential for past or present life.
The first man made probes to successfully land on the surface of Mars were two Soviet probes; Mars 2 on November 27 and Mars 3 on December 2, 1971, but both ceased communicating within seconds of landing. The NASA Viking program had two landers; Viking 1 remained operational for six years, Viking 2 for three years after their 1976 landing.

The United States launched the Viking space probes. Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975, and Viking 2 was launched on September 9, 1975. These probes were part of NASA's Viking program to study Mars.
Viking 1 was launched on August 20, 1975, and the second craft, Viking 2, was launched on September 9, 1975. Viking 1 entered Mars orbit on June 19, 1976. The Viking 1 touched down on the surface of Mars on July 20, 1976, and was joined by the Viking 2 on September 3.
