The invasion of the Soviet Union by Germany beginning on June 22, 1941 (Operation Barbarossa, originally Operation Otto).
Germany's ally, Japan, launched a similar Sunday surprise attack against the US at Pearl Harbor six months later on December 7, 1941, but in that case there were no treaties to abrogate, only specious peace talks.

∙ 13y agoJosef Stalin and the Politburo appealed to the Allied Forces leaders President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill when the Soviet Union had been attacked by the Nazi Germans. After a lot of negotiating (what I would call hemming an hawing) they took a risk and allowed the Soviets to join the Allied Forces.
