The first ever Viking raid in Ireland took place in 795 AD. At this stage, the Vikings were coming and going. They were farmers and would sow their crop in spring, then take off for a summers' raiding abroad, and return in time for the harvest with ships full of treasure.
Later they settled in Ireland and started fighting actual battles with indigenous kings. They started building fortifications in Dublin in 841 AD.
