Because Germany wanted to be more powerful than lots of countries so they invaded Poland to make a start. The British were allied with Poland so Britain decided to declare war on Germany. That only accounts for their battle during World War II. They were opponents in World War I because of Germany's attack on Belgium, with whom Britain had a defense pact.
