Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, reigned from May 14, 1643, until his death on September 1, 1715. His reign lasted 72 years, making him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in European history. Louis XVI, his great-great-grandson, reigned much later from 1774 until his execution in 1793 during the French Revolution.

Louis Ferdinand, dauphin of France, who died aged 36 and was the only son of Louis XV, then King of France. Therefore, Louis XVI became the new dauphin and eventually King instead of his father.
He inherited the throne on May 10th, 1774.
They used that premise in the post Napoleonic Wars to place Louis XVIII on the throne of France.
