The Tuskegee Institute was officially opened on July 4, 1881. Its head and only teacher at the time was Booker T. Washington. General Samuel C. Armstrong, head of the Hampton Institute, where Washington formerly taught, recommended him to establish the school to two Alabama men interested in creating the institute - George W. Campbell (a white man and ex-slaveholder) and Lewis Adams (a black man and ex-slave).

On the opening day, thirty students reported to Tuskegee for admission.
