It arose in the latter part of the 1950s and peaked in the 1960s and continues to to play a large role in the contemporary art world. Pop art today is just as much about debunking the elitist stereotype and making art accessible to the masses as it was in the 1950's and 1960's. Contemporary pop artists continue to incorporate everyday elements and icons drawn directly from popular culture, and expose what it means to live in our contemporary society, into their work. Pop art is very much alive today.
