The first artificial Earth satellite launched by the United States was "Explorer I". It was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Friday, January 31, 1958 at 10:48 PM Eastern time. The payload was assembled in 84 days and the Vanguard rocket modified to launch it. America had been 'burned' by the October, 1957 launch of the Russian "Sputnik I" (as well as two more satellites in late 1957), and was eager to put a satellite in orbit. Explorer 1 weighed less than 30 pounds. It carried a few scientific experiments and two radio transmitters to send the results back to earth. The experiments and radios were battery-powered since solar power in space was not yet developed. Explorer 1 went silent on May 23, 1958 and burned up on re-entry March 31, 1970.
