The bloody massacre.
The protesters were demonstrating against the Pass Laws, so these laws were the original provocation. However, the immediate cause was a hostile crowd of approximately 20,000 throwing stones at less than 150 police officers with firearms. The police were in fear of their lives because a few weeks earlier, an angry mob had attacked, killed, and mutilated 4 white and 5 black policemen at the Cato Manor Police station.
