Most of the countries such as England and The Netherlands gave up their colonies in Asia but the French did not therefore the Viet Namese revolted. That war continued when the northern communists wanted to rule the nation and the southern half of Viet Nam did not want to be communist. So poor Viet Nam (Formerly Indochina) battled for nearly thirty years.
The first military advisors were sent to Viet Nam in 1959 and the last one came home in 1973. The normal tour of duty for a soldier sent to Viet Nam was 12 months. Some served multible tours. In some rare cases the tour of duty could be as much as 18 months.
