samurai were active in Japan as early as the first land owners battled each other for property, as far back as 980 a.d. The exact origin is shrouded in mystery but it is believed they developed from warriors in the 7th Century AD begining with the Taika reform in 646 AD. Emperor Mommu introduced the law whereby 1 in 3-4 adult males were drafted into the national military. These soldiers were required to supply their own weapons, and in return were exempted from duties and taxes.
