American troops, both blacks and whites (segregated) were camped at or near Langstone, Newport. As a kid of about eleven, I, with my cousin, not only paid them a visit but were allowed into the camp. We came away with the cigarettes, chocolate, and so on we went there for. My cousin also came away with a fresh set of American Army fatigues, to replace his own clothes, which had become mightily fouled when he rode his bike into a pit, full of kitchen swill!
