I recommend you a clear place where you can see your house when you go out exploring. If you live in a jungle, live in the trees. If you live in a swamp, live in a big house. Also I recommend you make landmarks, so whenever you're lost, try to find landmarks to find your way home. One way I found my house is by putting torches everywhere, so it's easier to find my house in the dark. I even poured a bucket full of water on a mountain, so when ever I see my "water mountain", I know where my house is.
