The term 'task force' originated in the Royal Navy, and is used by militaries to refer to temporary groupings of forces outside of the standard divisional structure to complete a specific task. For example, in the Second World War the US Navy's Fast Carrier Task Force was created as the primary offensive force in the war in the Pacific, and was made up of a number of carrier groups, their supporting ships, and the aircraft with which they were loaded. The term is also used by civilians to describe an ad hoc committee formed to solve a specific problem.

What is the difference between a task force task group and a task unit task element?

Task Force Task Groups are essentially groups of different Naval units (e.g., ships or submarines) assigned to one of the Navy's operational Unified Combatant Commands, or Fleets, around the world. While in homeport, they are assigned to their normal overall command; when they enter an area of responsibility that is covered by a unified command (e.g., U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Sixth Fleet in the Med), it is transferred to that overall command as part of a task group and larger overall task force. A Task Unit is just an individual unit (e.g., ship or submarine) within the group; an element is an individual or group of individuals that belong to the unit, or an asset that belongs to the unit. As an example, a Destroyer would be a Task Unit under an overall Task Group; if it has an onboard Helo for ASW operations, the Helo and its crew would be the Task Unit Element.

What are two major problems of inactivity?

No work is done and no experience is gained. When no work is done, then you don't get any money, or you don't complete your homework, which means that you either get fired, chatised, or your grade is lowered. When no experience is gained, it is more difficult to complete that task (the one you did not do) if asked to do it. This makes is more difficult to learn from your mistakes as you did not learn how to do it when you were supposed to learn how to do it.
