He made a total of three voyages and they all were in the Bahamas. On his last one he was shipwrecked for over two years. The governor of Porto Rico knew he was there but refused to rescue him. He died soon after his rescue and his son filed suit against the Spanish crown to have them meet the terms of his contract with him. He was a greedy mean minded man who would have been forgotten in history if the Italian American's hadn't wanted a holiday simular to the Irish St. Patrick Day, so they made the native of Spain an Italian and created a day in his name.

He initially was warmly welcomed, but later locals detained ten of Columbus' men and tried to make an arrest of Columbus. After much argument, Columbus left and anchored at another island.
