Battles proper- Rheims and Orleans- l429/ There were a number of marches, what would now be called reconnaisance missions and rear-echelon actions such as Tours, Arles, etc- the poem ( The Good Joan) gets into this but the real war action was at Rheims and Orleans. It has been argued the Battle of Rheims- and the elaborate altar-piece or similar mural in the cathedral there, showing the coronation of King Charles Vii after the battle- was the inspiration for the starting line-up in Chess. It is coincidence but we have in the mural a Knight ( and a female one at that!), a Bishop, and a King, and the rooks could be the columns of the building! it is just a happenstance but some French fans say that is the opening alignment of Chess,
