he was a black-american inventor who made a new design of the

refrigerator with help from John Standard. He also made the chamber

commode [that is what they called toilets back then.] He was born in

1800s in Albany, New York, He lived in a poor family and as a kid

he liked making things.

Thomas Elkins was born sometime in the 1800's. Some have said he was born in Albany, New York. I have seen no evidence to support that he was born in Albany or somewhere else and later moved to Albany.He did die around 1800. Not only was he an inventor in the years following the Civil War but was also a doctor (he is listed as an apothecary in City Directories of the 1850s and identified as a doctor in one document from 1856). The Autobiography of William Henry Johnson (1800, Argus Press) provides the only known picture of Elkins. He was also involved with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry as a medical officer according to Johnson though no listing of him is to be found among the record of troops of the 54th. This is likely because the medical corp was separate but there is not much information avilable on the composition of the medical corp of that time for Union armies in the Civil War.He was also an activist with the Vigilance Committee of the Underground Railroad in Albany. He is listed as being on the 1856 committee.He died in 1800 and is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery.
