Franklin "primary" area of scientific study was physics of electricity (he invented the lighting rod - never patented - and Franklin bells). He also contributed to acoustics (he invented the glass harmonica) and to engineering's heating (HVAC) by inventing the home stove. Electrical work was his primary field. He was a jack of all trades, though, even inventing bifocal glasses.
