Curly fries are believed to have originated in the United States in the 1980s, although the exact location is unclear. They gained popularity through fast-food chains and restaurants that started serving them as a unique twist on traditional French fries. The distinctive spiral shape is created using a specialized cutter, and they are often seasoned with a blend of spices, enhancing their flavor. Today, curly fries are a popular side dish enjoyed in various dining establishments.
Curly fries are made the same way as french fries but are sliced with a twin potato curl cutter instead of a knife.

Fries are short for "French Fries", so i would think that they came from France... =p It is my understanding that the "French" in french fries refers to the shape and style of the cut of the potato when making them, not with their country of origin.
