All gods come from the minds of people. They once used them to explain things, natural occurrences and events before there was the scientific knowledge to understand how things happen. Religious systems became so embedded that even today, when we have ample knowledge about natural forces, religious explanations still pervade modern thought. Even people with strong scientific knowledge retain parallel religious explanations. Novelist George Orwell in his book 1984 explained this as 'double-think' - the ability to retain mutually contradictory ideas simultaneously by keeping the conflicting ideas in separate parts of the brain and not letting them come into contact and conflict.
