It was called Terminus and sometimes Thraserville. In 1842 it was renamed Marthasville. The name desired by the Railroad was Atlantica-Pacifica which was shortened to Atlanta and was incorporated as such in 1847.
The Milwaukee Road, officially known as the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, ceased its operations in 1980. The railroad's decline was marked by financial difficulties and a series of abandoned lines. In 1986, the remaining assets were acquired by the Soo Line Railroad, effectively marking the end of the Milwaukee Road as an independent entity.
