1. Historians are not sure why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. Some sources say that the Saxon warriors were invited to come to England to help keep out invaders from Scotland and Ireland. Another reason for coming to England may have been because their land often flooded and it was difficult to grow crops, so they were looking for new places to settle down and farm.

The Angles and Saxons had been mercenaries in the Roman army from about 150 AD onward, and were given land in England as retirees. These retired mercenaries covered a considerable span of southern England, though some were as far north as Hadrian's Wall.

What you are probably referring to in this question is the Saxon conquest which started when the Roman legions officially left (near 400 AD). The Saxon incomers generally contented themselves with the southeastern parts of the island, on a line from King's Lynn to Portsmouth, though they were reported by Bede to have sacked cities all the way through to modern Bristol and even into Wales in the early 400s.
