The Society of Friends was the most enduring of several religious groups to emerge out of the social and religious turmoil of the English Puritan Revolution.

The movement dates its origins from 1652, when George Fox announced that he had received from God a vision of "a great people to be gathered" in north west England. The movement spread to the American colonies soon thereafter.
