Archaeologists believe they have found the world's oldest church in northern Jordan. If tests confirm that it dates back to between AD33 and AD70, it would make it the earliest known place of Christian worship by about 200 years. This find suggests that larger Christian communities already had formal places of worship even in the middle of the first century CE.

It seems more common for the early Christians to worship in house churches, if only because of the cost of constructing and maintaining dedicated churches. By the third century, the Christian Church was becoming quite prosperous, and formal churches began to replace the house churches. In the fourth century, Constantine constructed numerous grand churches on the basilica model.
