Hanover is a German name. During WW1 there was a tremendous anti-German feeling so the Royal family changed it's name to one that sounded more English.

What was Queen Victoria's surname before she got married?

Queen Victoria, was the daughter of the Duke of Kent. Her official title before her eighteenth birthday (at which time she ascended the throne) was Alexandrina Victoria, Princess of Kent. While she was indeed a Hanoverian her surname officially was "Kent". After her marriage to Albert, Prince of Saxe Coburg and Goetha the (Queen) proclaimed her and her offsprings name to be styled "Saxe-Coburg". Remaining so until her grandson King George V anglicized the royal families name as "Windsor". Hanover. Hanover Wrong! She was from the House of Hanover Her surname was Guelph

What is Queen Elizabeth's the 1st last name?

Queen Elizabeth (I) surname (last/family) name was 'TUDOR'. It is a Welsh surname, and was carried by : - Henry (VII) Hencry(VIII) Edward(VI) Queen Mary (I) & Queen Elizabeth (I). The dynasty was known as the 'House of Tudor'. Because of marriage factors, the next monarch was King James (I). His surname was 'STUART' . Hence the next dynasty was the 'House of Stuart'.

What is the surname of Queen Elizabeth Family?

The official family name of the current Queen of England is Windsor- this surname has been carried by her forbears going back up to Queen Victoria (they are thus known as the 'House of Windsor'). Victoria's official surname was Hanover, which was the surname of all previous monarchs going back to William of Orange and his Queen Mary. However, neither of these surnames is the natural one- William of Orange's real surname was Guelf, which he abandoned in favour of the adopted name of Hanover because Guelf sounded too German for an English sovereign. Thus, the real surname of all the monarchs since him is really Guelf! The monarchs prior to William & Mary were James II, Charles II, Charles I and James I- these were all descended from the Kings of Scotland, whose name was Stewart, so they are known as 'the Stewarts' (James II had no surviving heir, which is why William & Mary assumed the English throne, in their capacity as German cousins of the English royals). Similarly, the Stewarts took the throne following the death of Elizabeth I, who died unmarried and childless- she, and all her predecessors going back to Henry VII, were descended from the Welsh kings, whose name was Tudor- so they are known as 'the Tudors'. Henry VII overthrew the last of the Norman kings, Richard III, at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485- the surname of the Norman kings was Plantagenet, going back to William the Conqueror, who invaded England and overthrew the Saxon King Harold in 1066. From King Harold back, I regret I am unsure of what the Royal surnames were. So, Royal surnames in order following the Norman Conquest are: Plantagenet , Tudor , Stewart, 'Hanover' (Guelf) and 'Windsor' (Guelf).

When was the Windsor era?

During World War I the name of the British Royal family (more correctly the name of the Royal House) was changed from Saxe-Coburg Gotha to Windsor, because of anti-German sentiment during the war. While earlier periods of British history are referred to by the name of the monarch, for example, Victorian, Edwardian or Elizabethan, the expression "Windsor Era" is not generally used.

What royal house briefly ruled England between the House of Hanover and the current House of Windsor?

Trick question. The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha followed the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and this is the same house in force today. But in 1917, with the war dead count becoming unbearable during WWI against Germany, George V changed the name to Windsor to make it sound more English and less Germanic.

What house was Queen Victoria from?

Queen Victoria was born into the House of Hanover. Victoria's royal ancestors, in addition to being kings of Great Britain, were also rulers of a kingdom in Germany called Hanover. Thus these British sovereigns held the title Elector (until 1814) and King (after 1814) of Hanover, as well as of Great Britain. (In Germany, the British sovereign was usually referred to as "King of Hanover-England.") German law provided that only males could be kings of Hanover; thus on the death of William IV "King of Hanover-England" in 1837, Victoria became queen of Great Britian, but the German title passed to her uncle, who then became King Ernest Augustus I of Hanover.

Was the name hannover in the family tree of the royal family?

Yes. it was dropped during World War I by King George, who adopted the House name of- Windsor. Hanover - also spelled as you have it, sounded too German when the Germans were the foes in the War. Hanover was also a popular brand of men's shoes, no longer extant. they made a fine copy of brown SS-style boots, I had one.

What is the Royal Last Name?

The Royal House of- Windsor. This very British name was chosen to replace the older and Germanic house of Hanover. By George- it was King George V who brought about the change- as in the War , they were fighting the Germans.
