Most castles were forts. They were cramped, cold, drafty, and generally unpleasant. The open courtyard called a bailey was a place for a barracks, workshops for blacksmiths, the stable. There were few to no provisions for comfort, and at best they were tolerable.

A few castles were fortified manor houses, and they were more comfortable.

In either case, if I lived in a castle and wished to relax, I would have gone to the inn in the neighboring village.
