In most cases it will be a German name usually originating from what is now the state of Saxony in Germany. The ending -au usually means "island (in a river)," so it may ultimately simply be a place name.

However, many times names get misspelled over time, e.g. Prochnau could be a misspelling of what was originally Brochnau or Brochnow, etc., which would point in different directions. It depends on your own family history a bit.
