i don't remember the answer exatcly, but i rember that it was the last name for a promoter. a president from the 19th century ( i forget which one) had trouble getting people to come to his speeches( there were no cars). he met the promoter who suggested that he announce free beer to any one who'd come. of course people flocked and he won presidency. the promoter's tactics caught on free beer became synomous with BOOZE.

I also am not exactly clear, but I can add that the promoter's name was actually 'Booz' and society added the 'e' later. I don't think it was beer, but it was given away in a special collectors bottle which became known as the "free booz".

From my memories, I remember that the special bottle was in the shape of a maple leaf and it was filled with whiskey. I have no sources to back this up though.
