1.) Devils den was formed over 180 million years ago under and within the beds of sandstone and shale that covered the area and over time was forced upward between existing strata. Where the sheet has been exposed to the seasonal freezing of water in the crevices and cracks, it has broken into smaller pieces that have been weathered over the years into separate boulders. Devils Den gained importance in the second day of the fighting near Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, with a Confederate assault by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's First Corps through this terrain. Conducted by the division of Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood, and including both the Texas Brigade and 3rd Arkansas, the charge was directed towards the left flank of the Union Army of the Potomac and hit Devil's Den as well as the high ground at Little Round Top. Devil's Den was defended by the Union III Corps division of Maj. Gen. David B. Birney, later reinforced by the V Corps.

The Tasmanian devil breeds in a den. Tasmanian devils have quite bizarre mating rituals. The female ignores timid and docile males (except, sometimes, as a practice run) and chooses a strong, dominant male that bites and scratches her. After chasing and catching her, the male brings her to his den, continuing to bite and scratch her into submission. When she is satisfied with his dominance, she falls into a trance-like state while he mates with her. Afterward, the male remains with the female to watch over her. However, when the exhausted male finally drops off to sleep, the female will wait at the entrance to the den, before making a dash for freedom. Often, the male will catch her very quickly and bring her back to the den.
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Tasmanian devils do not only live in logs. They also live in caves, bushes and old wombat burrows. They live in these because they are ideal hiding places. Further, when Tasmanain devil joeys grow too large for the pouch, the female needs a safe den to transfer the joeys to.
