The first genuine battle of the Spanish American War was the Battle of Manila Bay on 1 May 1898 would surely have been the only battle of the war if communicatations readily available today had existed in 1898. The complete defeat by Commodore George Dewey of the Spanish Pacific Squadron including the sinking of all seven of the squadron's Cruisers and one transport marked the end of the war for Spain.There should have been no Charge up San Juan Hill by Teddy Roosevelt and no invasion and occupation of Puerto Rico. The Philippines was the Prize that American Imperialists wanted and Cuba and Puerto Rico were just a side bar in the events of the day.In any case the war was tidied up with the Treaty of Paris. Cuba and the Philippines both achieved eventual independence and the US was stuck with a sometimes hostile Puerto Rico which had no intention of becoming a player on the International stage.Actual battles in Puerto Rico werer limited in size, scope and importance. General Nelson Miles was in command. Battles included the Fajardo lighthouse which was held by Marines and where most of the town's residents had sought protection after the Spanish troops retreated to San Juan. After taking Yauco, General Miles set his sights on Ponce, He took Arroyo and advanced on Guayama with only minor skrimishes, the 4th Ohio and the "Porto Rican Scouts"entered an evacuated Guayama. The Battle of Coamo led to the Battle of Silva Heights and on to Aspmante. Each battle saw two or five wounded Americans, two to ten dead Spaniards, 100 to 150 Spanish prisoners and 10 to 20 wounded Spaniards to care for while the rest fell back to a new position.The Splendid little War caused 3 American deaths and only 40 wounded in Puerto Rico from a deployed force of 15,472 men.
