Probably either the bombing of Dresden in Germany or of Tokyo in Japan, both of which produced firestorms and killed in excess of one hundred thousand people. A firestorm is a large blaze which feeds on itself and develops hurricane force winds as it sucks oxygen in to feed the flames. These fires spread faster than a person can run, and suck all the oxygen out of the air so people suffocate. Dresden was bombed all of one night by the British RAF, then all the following day by the US Air Force, and once more all the next night by the RAF to produce the firestorm. In the Pacific, due to the conditions prevailing there, the US had switched from high-altitude explosive bombing of Japanese cities to low altitude incendiary bombing, to produce multiple fires and burn large segments of cities. In several instances these numerous smaller fires merged into one large fire and became a firestorm. More people died in Dresden and in the March firestorm in Tokyo then died in either of the atomic attacks.
