The intent was always to reach a safer environment, in most cases that meant a small town devoid of military value, or better still a farm in the countryside. The problem was that there were only so many farms in tranquil commuities to escape to.

As an aside did your ever hear about the man that foresaw WWII and in an attempt to escape the consequences, he sold his Iowa farm and moved to a tiny Pacific Island that poised no threat. It was called Iwo Jima. (An Urban Legend that Paul Harvey reported on).
