The Union brigade led by Colonel Wilder at the Battle of Chickamauga, was the first Union brigade to be fully armed with Spencer rifles. The rifles could shoot 14 rounds per minute.
Three regiments make a division, thus, a division is three times the size of a regiment. However in the US Army. A Regiment was a sub-unit of a Division. During WW1 the Infantry Division consisted of 4 Infantry Regiments, divided into 2 Brigades. Thus a Division contained two Brigades and each Brigade contained 2 Regiments plus there were 2 Artillery Brigades of 2 artillery Battalions. At the beginning of WW2, the US Army wanted to reduce the size of its Infantry Division so they were more maneuverable on the battle field. The Brigades command level was eliminated and 1 Infantry Regiment was deleted. So an Infantry Division contained 3 Infantry Regiments and 3 Artillery Battalion(later increased back to 4) and an Engineer Battalion and support units of Medical, QuarterMaster, and other units. The size of the Infantry Division was about 15,000 men. However, since the support units that were not part of the Regiments, that means the Regiment was NOT 1/3 the size of the Division. The Regiments contained about 3,000 men. Each Regiment contained 12 Rifle Companies, identified by Letters A thru M(excluding "J"). The Regiments were grouped into 3 Battalions. So 1st Battalion(as it was called) contained Companies A, B, C & D, where the fourth one, Company D, was a heavy weapons company that supported the other three. A company contained 250 men. There were other support units and a Headquarters Company attached to each Battalion of the Regiment. An Airborne Division was organized very similar to the infantry division except it only had 9 companies per Regiment and the total size was 9,000 men. See Link with simple diagrams that explain the Organization of the US Army Division.
the periscope rifle was an ordinary rifle and was constructed using wood and relective mirror so that they could see up and above the trench walls. It also had a string attached to the trigger for firing. It was "invented" by Sergeant William Beech , a builders foreman, of the 2nd Battalion NSW, Australian Imperial Force, in May 1915. the periscope rifle was an ordinary rifle and was constructed using wood and relective mirror so that they could see up and above the trench walls. The normal slot for a captain in the WWII US Army was commanding a company. In the infantry, the actual companies which did the fighting were denoted by a letter, from A to M (excluding J). So, they were sometimes called "letter companies", or "line companies", or "rifle companies". At the start of the war the Table of Organization called for 225 men in a rifle company. By late in the war this had been reduced to 187 men, at full strength. In the rifle companies there were four platoons, commanded by lieutenants - three rifle platoons and a "weapons" platoon, with 81MM mortars and machine guns. A major or a lieutenant colonel usually commanded a battalion. In the infantry these had four companies - three rifle companies, as above, plus a weapons company. Three battalions made a regiment. 1st Battalion was A, B and C, and weapons company D, 2nd Battalion was E, F, and G and weapons company H, and 3rd Battalion was I, K, and L and weapons company M. The Marines used the identical scheme but their companies were a little bit larger.
HHC supports the rifle companies. HHC has all of the elements needed to support the line companies (rifle companies); Mess (food), Finance (pay), Medical (Medics), Heavy Support (Mortars), Maintenance (Mechanics), etc.
Yes they did, my Great Grand Uncle was Company Commander of the 1st Machine Gun Battalion, Rifle Brigade and was in Ireland from 1920 to early 1923 (around the time that the Machine Gun Battalion was disbanded).

It depends. There are 4 people in a team, 13 in a squad, about 42 in a platoon, 3 rifle platoons plus 1 weapons platoon plus HQ and support makes about 160-180 in a company. 3 rifle companies plus 1 weapons co. plus 1 HQ Co. make a battalion so 750-900 in a battalion. Sometimes less, sometimes more.
In a US infantry battalion in WWII there were four "line" or "letter" companies, and a HQ company.Every US regiment, Army and Marine, had three battalions. First battalion was always rifle companies A, B and C, and "Heavy Weapons" company D. Second battalion was always rifle companies E, F and G plus weapons company H. Third battalion was always rifle companies I, K and L and weapons company M. "J" was not used because it sounded too much like "K".
During Napoleonic Wars, the rifle regiments, such as the 95th Rifle Regiment, differed quite a bit from the regular infantry of the British Army in that they were armed with the formidable, but slow-loading Baker rifle, which was more accurate and of longer range than the musket During WWII, it was not. The Rifle Brigade raised seventeen battalions to fight in WWII. In 1937 the regiment formed the first motor battalions, a role that would allow The Rifle Brigade the freedom of movement that fitted their traditions of speed and initiative. But they were nota commando or an elite force.
