Many slaves were granted their freedom when their master died as a provision in his will. I believe a slave could also buy his freedom. They were usually freed when they were around 30 (manumission) Also when their master was very pleased and very kind he would set him free. eg. if you were a kind master and you were being mugged, and a slave saves you, you might free that slave. Question of my own: How would a master show that he freed his slave??
No. He lived in the early 1900's and died in 1915. He was born a slave in 1856. He had 3 spouses and 3 children. Portia, Booker, and Earnest. They would not be alive today, but there could be ancestors.
ancestors are your relations who were dead before you were born. For example, your great, great, great, great, great, great grandparents would be your ancestors. So it could be any time in History.
Slave owners would punish them by whipping them.

A slave, on being granted freedom, would receive manumission documents
Generally, they had to carry papers showing how they became free; either the paperwork granting manumission by an owner or paperwork showing they bought themselves out of slavery. A free Negro had to carry a certificate of freedom. It was numbered, registered, and issued by the courts. They were called "Free Papers" and it gave the name, stature, and complexion of the carrier. The papers indicated how the freedom was obtained. Free papers had to be renewed.
Assuming that this slave converted to Islam in an Islamic Country, he would be a prime candidate for manumission (being freed from being a slave). While it is Islamic Law that a slave's conversion to Islam requires manumission, as a historical question, it was poorly enforced.
Former slave owners or others who were involved in the slave trade would often provide slaves with an opportunity to buy their freedom through the practice of manumission. Slaveholders might allow slaves to purchase their freedom in exchange for money or labor, granting them legal freedom from bondage.
The second amendment to the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, also known as the Slave Clause, prohibited the emancipation of slaves to prevent them from becoming public charge.
One reason is that Southern whites feared that freed blacks would seek revenge for their past treatment as slaves.Other reasons were:1) freed blacks represented competition for white industries and professions2) freed blacks represented political opposition (as they would again in 1865)Manumission (which is simply the voluntary freeing of slaves) was unwelcome in the South because they felt that slaves would be more likely to try to escape if they had examples of successful freedmen. Another was that freed slaves might have legal status to hold previous owners responsible for maltreatment or injury. The concept of being "born into slavery" was seen as conferring a lifelong status by slaveholders.
No. You are who you are, not who your ancestors were.
Southern states passed laws after 1800 to discourage manumission because they feared that freed slaves would undermine the institution of slavery by inspiring rebellions or uprisings. By restricting manumission, they aimed to maintain control over the enslaved population and prevent any threats to the existing social order.
Your ancestors would be very proud. Several of my ancestors are buried in this cemetery.
