In the years leading to World War 2, Stalin was convinced of an imminent German invasion of Russia. He pleaded with the other European leaders to help contain Hitler, but they believed in a policy of appeasement. Stalin felt that he needed more time to prepare for the German attack, and a week before Germany's invasion of Poland he signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler, promising that neither side would attack the other. This bought Stalin about 2 years to raise a strong army and air force.
